Bar Phukan. The Bar Phukan at first governed as Viceroy only the tract between the Kallang and the Brahmaputra in Nowgong, but, as the Ahoms extended their dominions further west, his charge increased, until it included the whole country from Koliābar to Goalpāra, with Gauhāti as his head-quarters. His office was considered of higher importance than that of the Bar Barua and, as he was further removed from the seat of Government, his powers were more extended.
