The inscription is written in Sanskrit in the Pallava-grantha characters of the seventh century, on a rock behind the Sikhānāthasvāmi temple in Kuḍumiyāmalai (Pudukotta State). The inscription is divided into seven sections, corresponding to the seven classical *rāgas* and was engraved at the instance of an unnamed king who was a disciple of Rudrāchārya for the benefit of his pupils.
