*Other Views.*—A more or less similar view is expressed by Mr. M. S. Ramaswami Aiyangar in his recent work *Studies in South Indian Jainism*.³ According to him the early Pallavas, especially those kings in the fourth century A.D., were called Tiraiyar only and not as Pallavas. In support of this view he mentions the reference ⁴ to Viṣṇugōpa in Samudragupta’s Allahabad pillar inscription as king of Kāñchī only (*Kāñchēyaka Viṣṇugōpa*) and not as the king of the Pallavas.
