v1.c13.85

¹ Original letter. ² Original letter. ³ The account of the proceedings for 1665 is partly from Khafee Khan, but principally on the authority of Mahratta MSS. ⁴ [Aurangzeb received Sivājī at Agra, not at Delhi. (O.H.I., p. 427.)] ⁵ Nuzur signifies a present; an offering made by an inferior to a superior in token of fealty, submission, congratulation, &c. There are a vast number of ceremonies and observances attendant both on the mode of presenting and of receiving nuzurs. Under the name of an offering, it is frequently a heavy exaction, imposed on appointment to office, or succession to rank and property.
