Waring (A History of the Mahrattas, 1810, p. 215, App.) states that the Mahratta MSS., which he consulted, suggested poison, and that one MS. expressly charged ‘Toorya Bhy’ (i.e. Soyara Bāi) with murder. Professor Sarkar’s view is correct. The fact of Sivājī’s death was concealed for a time. See Fryer’s New Account, &c., ed. Crooke (Hakluyt), iii. 167 n.
