³ [Elephanta island (or Ghārāpuri) lies about six miles from Bombay, and four from the shore of the mainland. It is famous for the great Shaiva cave-temples, which are variously assigned to the eighth, ninth and tenth centuries. The island is to-day an important feature of the external defences of Bombay. (B.G., xiv.; Burgess's Rock Temples of Elephanta; Fergusson's Rock-cut Temples of India; I.G. Bom., ii. 129-32.)]
