² [i.e. Bhīlsā, the principal town of the Isāgarh subdivision in Gwālior State. Near it lie the famous Buddhist antiquities, for a description of which see Marshall, *A Guide to Sanchi*, Calcutta, 1918; Cunningham, *The Bhilsa Topes or Buddhist Monuments of Central India* (1854), and Maisey, *Sanchi and its Remains*, &c., with an introductory note by Major-General Sir Alexander Cunningham (1892). The name Bhīlsā appears to be derived from Bhāilla, or ‘Lord of Life,’ the form under which the Sun was worshipped locally in Central India during the Middle Ages. (Crooke, *P.R.* and *F.L.I.*, 8.)]
