v1.c7.152
¹ Meerasdar. This is a Mahomedan appellation, though in more general use than Thulkuree, which is the Mahratta word for the same sort of tenure. [The Mīrāsdar was liable to extra and arbitrary impositions, and was responsible for the default of neighbouring mīrāsdars, while his lien on the land was also conditional on his reimbursing all arrears due and expenses incurred during default. The word is derived from Arabic mīrās, mīrāsī, mīrāsdār; and these from waris, ‘to inherit,’ the mīrāsdār being a holder of hereditary property. (Yule’s Hobson-Jobson (1903), p. 565.)
