They were, probably, a universal institution of the Hindoo states, as ancient as village establishments, or divisions into casts; and the Deshadikaree and Deshlekuk, may possibly have been the chief managers in the district for the time being, as the Gramadikaree and Gramlekuk were in the village.¹
