v1.c7.188

¹ Naik means master. Naik was a common title of the Mahratta chiefs in the service of the Mahomedans. [Naik is the Sanskrit Nāyaka, ‘leader, chief.’ Rājā is Sanskrit for ‘king.’] ² Writtee is a Sanscrit word signifying livelihood. ³ Wutun is an Arabic word, which means one’s native country, as explained in a former note. ⁴ [Grant Duff rightly recognizes the English as the successors of the Marāthās, not of the Mughals.]
