¹ [See note, pp. 160–62, ante. De Boigne retired to his native place, Chambéry, where he spent much of the immense wealth which he had honourably accumulated on charitable institutions and municipal improvements. He died in 1830 at the age of eighty. ‘Count de Boigne was the worthiest of the many European free-lances or military adventurers who swarmed at Indian courts in the latter half of the eighteenth and the earlier years of the nineteenth century.’ (O.H.I., p. 536.)]
