¹ [Mountstuart Elphinstone’s embassy to Kābul in 1808 never got beyond Peshāwar. ‘Shāh Shuj’a, to whom the mission was accredited soon afterwards was expelled from his kingdom, so that no direct political results were obtained. The envoy devoted much of his time to investigation through agents and by all means at his command of the conditions existing in Afghanistan, then a completely unknown country. He embodied the results of his researches in a book of great value, entitled *An Account of the Kingdom of Caubul*, &c., which was published in 1815, and still counts as an authority.’ (O.H.I., p. 614.)
