¹ That is horse furnished by Jagheerdars. [*Saranjām* (Surinjām) is a Persian word signifying ‘beginning-ending,’ and is used in India to mean ‘apparatus,’ ‘goods and chattels,’ and the like. But in the Deccan and Southern Marāthā country it is applied specially to grants of land or assignments of revenue, for special objects, such as the maintenance of a military contingent for service; to civil officers for the maintenance of their state; or for charitable purposes.
