v2.c55.71

⁴ [The Nepāl War (1814–16) was occasioned by the hostile aggressions of the Gūrkhas, who invaded and seized the Būtwal and Sheorāj regions, and in 1814 attacked three police-stations in the former area. The Marquess of Hastings declared war in May 1814; but the earlier operations failed in consequence of very incompetent leadership. The failure was partly compensated for by successes in Kumāon and on the upper Sutlaj, and in 1816 Sir David Ochterlony forced the Nepalese to sign the treaty of Sagauli (Segowlee), whereby Garhwāl and Kumāon were ceded to the British, the Tarāi, or lowland below the hills, was surrendered, Sikkim was evacuated, and the appointment of a British Resident at Kathmāndu, the capital of Nepāl, was accepted by the Nepalese.
