In 1002 Mahmūd was occupied in crushing a rebellion in Sīstān. The leader of the rebels escaped death by means of a ready tongue and when brought before his conqueror addressed him by the then unfamiliar title of Sultān². He was pardoned and rewarded with the government of another district, Sīstān being included in the provincial government of Khurāsān.
