This famous column, known as the Qutb Mīnār, was founded in 1231-32 in honour of the saint, Khvāja Qutb-ud-dīn Bakhtyār Kākī, of Ūsh, near Baghdād, who, after residing for some time at Ghaznī and Multān, settled at Delhi, and lived at Kīlokhrī, highly honoured by Iltutmish, until his death on December 7, 1235. The name of the column has no reference, as is commonly believed, to Qutb-ud-dīn Aibak, the master and patron of Iltutmish.
