¹ The stronghold is variously styled in Persian texts Kandana, Khandana, and Khandaba, in which some resemblance to the last two syllables of the name of the island can be traced, but the Persian script, being easily corruptible by ignorant or careless scribes, is ill-suited for the preservation of the correct forms of proper names, and it is the description of Bhīmdeo’s retreat that enables us to identify it with Beyt Shankhodhar.
