The port of Damān was held by one Sayyid Abu-’l-Fath, who, as he neither paid taxes nor materially acknowledged the central government, could expect no support when, in 1559, the Portuguese viceroy, Constantino de Braganza, attacked him, drove him first from Damān and then from Pārdī, and established the Portuguese firmly in Damān and Bulsār, securing native support by assigning the customs of the former port to the governor of the island of Salsette, which was within the dominions of Ahmadnagar.
