² The vast numbers of infantry led into the field by the rajas of Vijayanagar will frequently be noticed. They suggest a suspicion of deliberate exaggeration by Muslim historians for the purpose of magnifying the exploits of Muslim warriors, but the suspicion is unjust. 'Abd-ur-Razzāq, an unprejudiced observer, who visited Vijayanagar in 1442, when the kingdom was at peace, says that the army consisted of 1,100,000 men.
