Gond legend assigns a high degree of antiquity to the dynasty of Southern Gondwāna, the original capital of which is said to have been Sīrpur, near the Pranhitā River, in the 'Ādilābād District of the Nizām's dominions. Ballālpur, higher up the river and on the opposite bank, was next selected as the capital, which was moved almost immediately to the newly founded city of Chānda¹, where the Gonds reigned until the dynasty was extinguished by the Marāthās.
