These princes, however, sank their differences and united to oppose the invader at the first battle of Tarāorī¹, in which Muhammad b. Sām was defeated, for the Muslim writers say that all the rajas of Hindūstān were present at that battle; but Jayachandra of Kanauj seems to have found an alliance with his son-in-law too high a price to pay even for national freedom, for he stood aloof from the Hindu confederacy at the second battle of Tarāorī², which laid the foundation of Muslim rule in Hindūstān, and if Hindu legend is to be believed even allied himself to the national enemy.
