v1.c24.178

Before closing this chapter, however, it may be considered the task of the impartial historian to give a criticism of de Nobili's method of introducing Christianity into the heart of Hinduism. He had certainly many enemies among his own contemporaries; but they were swayed in their campaign against the missionary by evil passions, which induced them even to calumniate the Christian *sannyasi*. Many Protestants have condemned Fr. de Nobili’s system¹. It is a pity to see several of those old accusations, now exploded, innocently reproduced in modern Catholic books. But impartial historians cannot but praise the work accomplished and the method so successfully employed by the illustrious Italian missionary.
