The king of the Pāradán is the king of the Pāradas of Sanskrit or Pāladas of Aśoka. I have shown elsewhere¹ that these Pāradas were a northern nation, in north Afghanistan, and their modern representatives are the Bārad-zái. The existence of a king of the Pāradas in 293-294 A.D. proves that the community ceased to be republican which they had been in the days of Aśoka, and that the Pārada king was independent and not under the Kúshán Sháh, who thus does not seem to have had the whole of Afghanistan under him.
