² Although I have arrived at the theory of the Indian origin of the Malays quite independently, it is only fair to note that Gerini made the same suggestion in his ‘Researches on Ptolemy’s Geography of Eastern Asia’ (pp. 101 ff). I have not referred to his views as they are mixed up with a great deal of extraneous matters and some amount of fanciful etymological derivations. So far as I can see, his views rest primarily on the resemblances of geographical names.
