v1.c19.s2.25
It is indeed difficult to identify the Asuras with any of the ancient people. Sten Konow takes them to be non-human. Banerji Sastri considers the Asuras as immigrants from Assyria, the followers of the Asura cult who preceded the Aryans in India and were the authors of the Indus Valley civilization. Bhandarkar takes the Asuras to be the Assurs or Assyrians and suggests that the *Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa* refers to the Asura settlements in Magadha or South Bihār.
