a fact which is confirmed by the *Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa* which states that sages of Northern India repaired to the Madra country to study the Vedas. The *Bṛihadāraṇyaka Upanishad* refers to Kāpya Patañchala as living among the Madras. The territory of the Southern Madras roughly corresponds to Sialkot and its adjoining districts in the Central Punjab which were known as the Madradeśa as late as the time of Guru Govind Singh.³⁶ In Buddhist times the Madras dwelt between the Chenāb and Rāvi.
