In the course of Indian history, north Indian powers are often seen to be trying to dominate over south India. During our period, the Guptas made one such attempt, but it was successful only for a short time. In a later period a Deccan power—the Rāṣṭrakūṭas—attempted to secure political domination in northern India; during our period, no such attempt was made by any Deccan or South Indian power.
