¹ I have here followed Professor Rapson (CCBM. clxxxv) in preference to Dr. D. R. Bhandarkar (*Lectures on Ancient Indian Numismatics*, p. 192). The latter has worked out the ratio as 1:14; but his calculation is based on the theoretical standard of the Sanskrit classical works, not on the actual standard of coins in circulation.
