Brahmanic tales generally are untrustworthy for traditional history, because of the lack of the historical sense; yet sometimes they introduce allusions of an historical kind incidentally, as well as geographical particulars and notices of other matters, and these are useful and sometimes even valuable; but the historical allusions can hardly be trusted of themselves, and should not be relied on unless they are corroborated from elsewhere. The Rāmāyaṇa is highly brahmanical and its stories fanciful and often absurd.
