The accounts of the mythical Kāśyapas have been noticed in chapter XVI. Two so-called vamśas of the Kāśyapas are found, one of which is wholly mythical and has been noticed there. The other deals with historical members of the Kāśyapa brahman family and is given by four Puranas.¹ Their versions are based on a common original, and are closely alike, but the Kūrma has introduced some variations, which do not however materially alter the purport. The Vāyu, Brahmāṇḍa and Liṅga collated suggest the original reading. The Matsya (199) gives a long list of rishis and gotras.
