Śantanu’s grandsons were Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Pāṇḍu. Dhṛtarāṣṭra had many sons Duryodhana, &c., who as the elder branch were called the Kauravas. Pāṇḍu had five sons, Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīma, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahadeva, who were known as the Pāṇḍavas. Pāṇḍu died early, and there was intense jealousy between the cousins.
