These results are exhibited in the annexed table and map.² They do not mean that the Aila stock constituted the bulk of the population, but that it had conquered those lands and was the dominant body in them. It supplied the kṣatriya class, which would have influenced the bulk of the people profoundly, so that the higher classes were no doubt largely leavened with Aila blood, though the lower grades would have remained racially the same, namely, the various groups of pre-existing folk.
