Instead of Sagara the list in the Droṇa-parvan names Rāma Jāmadagnya; but he does not properly fall into this enumeration because he was not a king. Suhotra Ātithina is Suhotra, the descendant of Vitatha,¹ Bharata's successor, Ātithina being a variant of Vaitathina. All these were eminent kings and all will be found in the genealogies² except Pṛthu Vainya, whose lineage stands quite apart from the other genealogies and seems rather mythical.³ The list does not arrange the kings in any proper order. Māndhātṛ, Sagara, Bhagīratha, Ambariṣa,⁴ Dilīpa (Dilīpa II) and Rāma Dāśarathi belonged to the Ayodhyā dynasty; and Marutta to the Vaiśāla dynasty. Yayāti was of the Aila race; and among his descendants were Bharata, Suhotra, Rantideva and Bṛhadratha in the Paurava line, and Śaśabindu a Yādava and Śivi an Ānava. There were two kings named Gaya Āmūrtarayasa (son of Amūrtarayas), one who reigned at Gayā,⁵ and the other on the river Payoṣṇī⁶ (the modern Tapti); the former seems to be meant here.
