v1.c18.45

Even within the Jain church there occurred certain schismatical difficulties at this time. In the fourteenth year of Mahāvīra’s office as prophet, his nephew and son-in-law, Jamāli, headed an opposition against him, and similarly, two years afterwards, a holy man in the community, named Tisagutta, made an attack on a certain point in Mahāvīra’s doctrine. But both of these schisms merely concerned trifles, and seem to have caused no great trouble, as they were speedily stopped by the authority of the prophet himself. Jamāli, however, persisted in his heretical opinions until his death.
