v1.c22.11
It is possible that the Pañchālas represent five Nāga clans (with *ala* ‘a water-snake’ cf. Eng. *eel*) connected with the Kurus or Krivis (meaning ‘serpent’ or ‘Nāga’), and that none of the families is of pure Āryan blood, for the Nāgas in the epic are closely related to the Pāṇḍus; but all such considerations at present rest on speculation rather than fact.
