v1.c22.33
³ That besides the professional bards the domestic priests were eulogisers of the king may be remarked from the epic tale of the king's daughter who reproaches the daughter of the domestic priest: 'I am the daughter of a king, who is lauded; thou art only the daughter of the laudator.' The first priests who handled the epics were of this sort, domestic priests, royal chaplains, indifferently well read in theology and philosophy but conversant with the rites of the Atharvaveda, which as a popular work of its day is associated with the earlier form of epic (*Chhāndogya Upanishad*, III, 4).
