v1.c24.104
10. In the Purāṇas the monarchs of the five kingdoms of Aṅga (Monghyr and Bhāgalpur), Vaṅga (Bīrbhūm, Murshidābād, Bardwān and Nadīā), Puṇḍra (Choṭā Nāgpur), Suhma (Bānkurā and Midnapur), and Kaliṅga (Orissa) are derived from eponymous heroes who are supposed to be brothers belonging to the family of Anu². With the exception of Aṅga, none of these kingdoms is mentioned in early literature. The earliest monument which throws light on the history of Kaliṅga is the Hāthīgumphā inscription of Khāravela (*v. sup.* pp. 314 f.)
