v1.c24.161
In the first place, Herodotus says (I, 177) that ‘Cyrus in person subjugated the upper regions of Asia³, conquering every nation without passing one by’; but this statement is so broadly comprehensive that it is difficult to particularise regarding North-western India except through indirect corroborative evidence. In fact, most of the allusions by Herodotus to India refer to the times of Darius and Xerxes. It is certain, however, that Cyrus, by his own personally conducted campaigns in the east, brought the major part of Eastern Īrān, especially the realms of Bactria, under his sway⁴.
