4. The little kingdom of Kāçi (Benares) was bordered by Vatsa on the west, Kosala on the north, and Magadha on the east. Some details of its relations with these countries may be recovered from early literature. According to the Çatapatha Brāhmaṇa (XIII, 5, 4, 19), its king Dhṛitarāshṭra was conquered by the Bharata prince Çatānīka Sātrājita (p. 308). Such incidental notices of its later history as have been preserved by Buddhist writers have been collected in Chapter VII, pp. 180 ff.
