⁵ The site of the domain of Saubhūti cannot be determined more precisely from the contradictory statements of the Greek authorities. Dr Vincent Smith uses the statement of Strabo as to the mountain of salt (Strabo xv, C. 700) to fix the principality to the Salt Range between the Jhelum and the Indus. Against this identification is the difficulty that the contradictory statements in our sources all agree at any rate in placing the principality east of the Jhelum. Even in Arrian VI, 2, 2, the royal seat of Sopeithes is on the *left* bank of the river. The salt mines of Mandī, on the other hand, to which Droysen refers, lie, one would think, much too far to the east.
