v1.c31.74
The name of Orthagnes is Pahlava. It is of Persian origin, and the Greek equivalent of *Verethragna*, 'the Victorious.' The type 'Victory' on his coins may be an allusion either to an actual victory or to the king's name. It is used also by Vonones I of Parthia (8–11 a.d.) (Pl. VIII, 50) whose name has a similar meaning—*Vanāna*, 'the Conqueror'; but in this case it would seem undoubtedly to refer to the victory over Artabanus².
