⁵ Yuan Chwang described Kumāra (Bhāskaravarman) of Kāmarūpa as a Brahman. But his inscription describes him as the descendant of Naraka and Bhagadatta, who do not appear to have been Brahmans. See *EI*, XII, pp. 71-72. It is, however, pointed out by Dr. Raychaudhuri that the claim to Brahmanhood may have been based upon descent from Nārāyaṇa Deva (possibly to be identified with Viṣṇu, son of the *ṛṣi* Kaśyapa) (*YC*, II, p. 186). Nārāyaṇa, it is well known, was the father of Naraka according to Purāṇic legends.
