³ *Rājātaraṅgiṇī*, VII, 48-63, 103. The identity of *Hammīra* with Maḥmūd was recognised by Reinaud. Thomas had shown that it is derived from the Arabic title *Amīr ul-mu'minīn*, which appears on the coins of the Ghaznavids. See Stein's footnote on verses 47-60 of Book VII, in his Eng. Trans. Also *infra*, chapter on the *Candratreyas* (Candellas).
