² The Malla settlements were probably situated in the western portion of the division of modern Nepal which is known as the *Sapt-Gaṇḍakī*; see *supra*, p. 185. One of the principalities of Nepal situated at the foot of Dhaulagiri still bears the name of Mallabhūmi (vulgar Malebhuin), the land of the Mallas; see *Le Népal* Vol. II, p. 210.
