Śiśunāga⁵ was succeeded according to the *Purāṇas* by his son **Kākavarṇa**, and according to the Ceylonese chronicles by his son **Kālāśoka**. Jacobi, Geiger and Bhandarkar agree that Kālāśoka, "the black Aśoka" and Kākavarṇa, "the crow-coloured" are one and the same
