Like his predecessors³ Aśoka assumed the title of *Devānaṃpiya*. He generally described himself as *Devānaṃpiya Piyadasi*.⁴ The name Aśoka is found only in literature, and in two ancient inscriptions, *viz.*, the Māski Edict of Aśoka himself, and the Junāgaḍh inscription of the Mahākshatrapa Rudradāman I. The name Dharmāśoka is found in one Mediaeval epigraph, *viz.*, the Sārnāth inscription of Kumāradevī.¹
