¹ Thomas, *Jainism, or the Early Faith of Asoka*; also by Professors Kern (*IA.* v. 275), Pischel, Minayeff, etc. Reasons have been given above for the belief that Chandra Gupta, the grandfather of Aśōka, was a Jain. His grandson Sampadi or Samprati was also a devoted Jain.
