The Harati chiefs held the Niḍugal territory from 1640, when they were invested by the Vijayanagar king Veṅkaṭapati-Rāya II with the government of Doḍḍēri, Siroha, Tāvàregere, Hiriyūr, Ayamangala, and Niḍugal-durga. By tradition the founder is said to have come from the Bijāpur country. Hoṭṭeṇṇa-Nāyaka in 1559 is described (Cl 54) as brother of the Nāga virgins of Nāga-lōka, a Bēḍa without guile, of the 850 worthies of the 350 gōtras. They continued in power till the time of Tipu Sultān, who annexed the place to Mysore.
