As regards the actual system of recruitment we have unfortunately not many details. In describing the origin of the Zemindari of the Doṭṭiya fort, the local chronicles give the following information: "At the time when the Padsha came against the Rayer (i.e. the king of Vijayanagara) before the capital was taken, the Rayer sent out red garments, with a message that so many as were willing to leave their families should put on those garments and prepare for war. My ancestor Macala nayaker of the Panjai valla tribe, with his people assembled; and after defeating the invaders came to the Rayer's presence".⁴
