The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the origin and development of the craft guilds. The second part deals with the organisation and government of the guilds. The third part deals with the economic and social activities of the guilds. I have tried to show that the guilds were not merely economic organisations, but also social and religious ones, and that they played a very important part in the life of the medieval town.
